Project intro

Voice2Note is a hands-free field journal built around a Pebble Index 01 ring: hold the ring's button, say a note, let go, and the note travels from the phone to a small Mailbox service and then home to the author's laptop, where a local Gemma model turns it into a short journal paragraph. The review screen is the point of the design — it shows the author's own words next to the model's draft and an editable observations table, and nothing counts as confirmed until the author presses the button.

The honest finding is the story. On a four-hour walk the author recorded three notes, and the phone's transcription got one word wrong in every single one — "library" became "rivalry", "kids" became "kit" — and the model repeated those mistakes with full confidence, capitalised as proper nouns, because it only ever sees the transcript, never the audio. The quote check (every observation must carry a verbatim quote from the note) stopped invented facts but could not stop repeated errors, and the model also reordered the day, putting the afternoon remark ahead of the evening plan.

Vibe-coded evidence, in the author's own words on DEV (10 October 2026): "I built this with Claude Code. It wrote a large share of the code and the first drafts of this post, which is why the post is marked as AI-assisted. I am not embedding the session transcript." GitHub stars: 0 at the 29 October 2026 check (github.com/ninefyi/hf26challenge-week1; MIT; created 7 October 2026, last push 24 October 2026; 35 tests in the repo).

Honest limits: Voice2Note is not a hosted app and has no online demo — it runs locally (Pebble ring + phone app + a Render Mailbox that deletes notes once pulled + Gemma 3 12B via Ollama on the author's laptop), so the repository page is the demo link and there is nothing to try in the browser here. The Mailbox on Render's free plan sleeps after 15 minutes, so notes waited 10 to 14 seconds while it woke; the author also reports two unresolved glitches (a pull that first returned 0 notes, and Render stops picking up commits until a manual deploy) and is explicit that two wake-up cases are not a guarantee.
