Project intro

Open Habit is a free, open-source habit tracker for iPhone: tick off the small things each day, set daily or weekly goals, or count reps — “read 5 pages a day”, “do 10 push-ups”. Checking off, counting, and adding a one-line note for the day all happen inside a single cell.

It’s built for convenience and privacy: no account to sign up for, no ads, no analytics, and everything works offline. You can check in from a Home Screen widget or a Shortcut, and from Apple Watch too. Your data lives on your device first, syncs through your own iCloud when you have it, and can be exported as a full JSON backup — you can also import old data from HabitKit.

Author Oleksandr Zamai posted it to Hacker News on October 27, 2026, saying he built it for himself as a HabitKit replacement. The app went live on the App Store in October 2026, version 1.2 shipped on October 30, the repo still had commits on October 27, and it has 3 stars on GitHub.

One thing to know: it only runs on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, needs iOS 17 or newer, and there is no Android, Mac, or web version. It’s a small open-source project kept up by one person, so don’t expect big-company support or update speed — your habit data is mostly backed up by your own iCloud and JSON exports.
