Project intro

Lightyears Home is a browser game about navigating space: you're lost somewhere in the Milky Way, and all you have is the pulsars in the sky. You read the stars, recognize the pulsar signals, and work your way back to Earth, one step at a time.

The first level is a prologue, with a guide called VESPER pointing out every beacon for you. Finishing it unlocks the Navigator and Deep Space levels, plus a daily puzzle. The star positions come from the real HYG star catalog (109,000 stars) — they're not drawn at random.

The author posted the game to Hacker News on 1 November 2026, saying he vibe-coded it. Right now it's still very basic, with just pulsars and spectrum analysis, and he asked readers whether it's fun and whether he should keep building it out with wormholes, energy limits, and time limits.

One thing to know: it's still an early version — three levels plus a daily puzzle, so there's not a lot of content yet. The first load takes a while as it draws all 109,000 stars; a black screen with a single "charting" line is normal. The author himself says he hasn't decided whether to turn it into a full game — that depends on the feedback.
