Scumble
Free open-source AI image editor built in five weeks with Claude Code - GPL-3.0, 144 stars and counting.
Project intro
Scumble is a free, open-source (GPL-3.0) desktop editor for AI image inpainting and editing. You select part of a picture (or draw boxes on an empty canvas), describe what should be there, and the model's answer comes back as its own layer, colour-matched to its surroundings - nothing is baked in until you flatten. It renders wherever you already work: your own ComfyUI (local or remote), or API keys for FLUX 3 Image, FLUX.2, GPT Image, Nano Banana, Seedream and more. Object selection (SAM2), background removal and depth maps run locally inside the app via ONNX Runtime. The headline story is how it was built: developer DenRakEiw built Scumble with Claude Code in just five weeks, and put it plainly: "I didn't type most of that code. Claude Code did." His job was deciding what to build, testing on his own photos, and saying "no, not like that" - backed by roughly 83,000 lines of app code, pixel-level tests against the real app, and a public CLAUDE.md that records every decision so no session starts from scratch. This is no one-off demo toy: the repository (DenRakEiw/scumble) has grown to 833 commits, 144 stars and 48 releases, with updates still landing every few days. The engineering is serious too: an Electron shell over a WebGL2 tile renderer that handles 15,000-pixel images without freezing, hot pixel kernels in Rust compiled to WASM, and an MCP server that exposes every feature as a command - so an AI agent can open, select, generate and export with the same undo stack as a human. A lightweight free alternative to Photoshop for AI-assisted retouching: free forever, on the Microsoft Store and GitHub, with Linux builds (AppImage/.deb) and macOS on the way.
