Project intro
Word Atlas turns IELTS vocabulary into a picture atlas you can flip through: 7,298 entries, each with an original illustration, Chinese and English definitions, two original example sentences, plus collocations, word families and usage tips. It runs in the browser with no sign-up, and your progress is stored on your own device.
Learning a word takes four steps: see the picture to grasp the meaning; listen to the sounds, with both UK and US pronunciations for every word and the example sentences read aloud too, 22,905 recordings in total; practise recall with pick-the-meaning, complete-the-sentence, listen-and-identify and spelling exercises; then let FSRS schedule your reviews based on how well you remember, with an adjustable target retention. Learned words light up on a star map: 19 topics form the stars, you can drag to rotate and scroll to zoom, and tapping a star opens its word card. A looping starry soundtrack and six ambient scenes, from a rainy library to a morning coast, keep you company while you study.
It is fully open source: the code is MIT-licensed, and the dataset (7,298 entries, 14,596 example sentences, all the illustrations and recordings) is released under CC BY 4.0, so you can build your own study tools or Anki decks from it. The repository went live on 25 October 2026 and picked up 3,351 GitHub stars and 731 forks in under a week. An iOS app is in the works, with the first beta testers being recruited now.
The author is upfront about the limits: the definitions, examples and illustrations were made with generative AI and the voices synthesized with ElevenLabs; everything passed automated checks but has not been reviewed by hand word by word, so mistakes can slip through. It is not an official IELTS word list and promises no score gains. The live website evolves on its own, so its features may differ from the open-source base version in the repository. And since progress lives only on your device, export a backup before switching devices.
