Open-source Excel-style spreadsheet in pure Rust: 500+ functions, PivotTables, charts, and an MCP server.
GridCraft is an open-source, clean-room spreadsheet — a Microsoft Excel-style app rebuilt in pure Rust by the ArtCraft team. It runs natively on macOS, Windows, Linux and BSD, and in the browser via WebAssembly, with XLSX as the native format: 500+ functions, dynamic arrays, PivotTables, 17 chart types, conditional formatting, and print settings round-trip. One Rust codebase, no subscription, no license server, no telemetry.
It is one of the ArtCraft "Crafting Apps" from Brandon Thomas, who told PetaPixel (2026-10-07) that he "used Anthropic's Opus 5.5 AI LLM to recreate seven of Adobe's most popular apps in Rust" — and then kept going into a full creative suite plus this spreadsheet. The repo itself carries agent-native fingerprints: AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md at the root, a "For agents: MCP, CLI and the control channel" section, and commits co-authored by "claude."
The numbers are the story here: created 2026-10-07, 1,320 stars and 515 forks in days, 26 commits, and GridCraft v0.4.0 shipped 3 hours ago at audit time — with signed macOS/Windows/Linux/BSD installers and a web build in every release. Pre-alpha, moving visibly fast.
