Open Overwatch
No sign-up, no install: open a web page and watch a live planet — satellites, quakes, storms, ships, and cameras, all stitched together from public data.
Project intro
Open Overwatch is a live Earth you can open without signing up or installing anything: open the page and you can watch satellites, earthquakes, storms, ships, and cameras on one living map. There is no membership and no Pro tier — every layer is free, all the data comes from public sources like USGS, NOAA, NASA, and CelesTrak, and your settings live only in your own browser.
Using it is mostly pointing and following: click a satellite and its orbit unfolds across the map; click a traffic camera in London or Singapore and you will see the latest frame from that street. There is also a “what is above you tonight” view that tells you in plain words when the space station and Starlink will pass over, and when meteor showers and auroras are worth watching, so you can step outside at the right minute. The 3D globe zooms all the way out to the Solar System, then to 1.5 million asteroids, 6,339 exoplanets, and 43,000 galaxies.
Layers switch on and off like an air-traffic controller’s screen: satellites, aircraft, ships, earthquakes, storms, and cameras, plus wildfires, weather radar, aurora forecasts, world radio, and submarine cables. If you want something wilder, switch to night vision, thermal, an old CRT, or a film-noir filter, then turn on the tactical HUD for grid coordinates.
Three things to know: first, you will not see live aircraft in the browser — flight networks do not accept requests straight from web pages, so aircraft and military flights need the free desktop version; second, every dot comes from someone else’s feed, so it can be delayed or wrong — fine for looking, not for flying, sailing, or emergencies; third, this is a work in progress — version 0.5 went live on 1 October 2026 and new features keep landing. It is MIT open source, so the code is free to read and fork.
