Project intro

BookDNA is a book recommender for fantasy readers who are tired of AI inventing titles. It reads a book's "DNA" — its tropes, setting, and tone — and recommends matching books, then checks every single suggestion against Open Library so it never recommends a book that doesn't exist. The author just turned it into an MCP server (built with mcp-use, deployed on Manufact Cloud): four tools an AI can call — search_book, get_book_dna, recommend, recommend_by_tropes — returning a small "parchment shelf" app that appears right inside the chat. It was tested working through a GPT model in Manufact's Inspector chat, not just Claude: one server, any AI.

The build itself is the vibe-coding story. In the dev.to post (2026-10-14, "I turned my book recommender into an AI app in a day") the author writes: "I built this with Claude Code. I made the decisions, reviewed every change, and tested it myself, and I kept a 'friction log' of everything that confused me along the way." Two of those bugs made the post: Open Library's older covers redirect to archive.org and got silently blocked by the MCP widget's allowlist, and a proxy header mix-up that made every user share one rate limit — found only by testing against the real deployment.

One honest note: there's no public web UI — the live entry point is the MCP server endpoint plus the repo. The repo is public and actively pushed (2026-10-15), but at 0 stars this is a newborn; the value here is the worked example of turning an AI app into an MCP server in a day.
