OpenGnothia
A privacy-first, open-source desktop companion for AI-assisted self-reflection — therapy sessions, journaling and dream analysis, all on your device.
Project intro
OpenGnothia is a privacy-first, open-source desktop companion for AI-assisted self-reflection. It offers guided therapy sessions, a journal, dream analysis, mood tracking and check-ins, breathing exercises and structured therapy programs — with a choice of six therapeutic approaches, from Psychoanalysis and CBT to Schema Therapy, Logotherapy, ACT and Stoicism.
Everything stays on your own device: sessions and journal entries are stored locally in SQLite, there is no backend, no account and no telemetry, and you bring your own API key (Anthropic Claude, OpenAI or any compatible endpoint). A dashboard surfaces your current session, streaks and mood trends, and each session can end with an AI summary and suggested focus areas.
The author is explicit about how it was made. From his Show HN post: "Built with Claude Code. I work full-time as a team lead at an edtech company, so this was built in evenings and weekends, mostly through vibe coding sessions." The app is free and open source under MIT for macOS, Windows and Linux (32 stars on GitHub at drafting time). Note, in the author's own words: OpenGnothia is a self-exploration tool, not a replacement for professional mental health care.
