The Revenge of Rutabaga
Overall #1: a top-down roguelite built in 72 hours where Claude Code and Codex wrote most of the Phaser 3 modules — take back Halloween from the Pumpkin King.
Project intro
The Revenge of Rutabaga won Overall Enjoyment #1 and AI Direction & Adaptability #1 at the Ultimate AI-Powered Game Jam #5. It's a top-down room-by-room roguelite: long ago, Halloween lanterns were carved from rutabagas — then the Pumpkin King took the holiday for himself. Tonight, one forgotten rutabaga lantern fights back through three fields of monster-filled rooms. After each room you pick your next door — Fight, Elite, Treasure, or Lucky Slots — while the Midnight Clock races every fight from 9 PM to midnight in 30 seconds. Five weapons (sword, bow, throwing axe, hammer, piercing staff), stat-boost cards after every fight, and pumpkins as currency for rerolls and the slot machine.
The team's "How We Used AI" section is unusually specific about the division of labor: "Art (GPT image generation): characters, monsters, the Pumpkin King, weapons, backgrounds and the opening story panels… Music (Suno): the battle theme and the boss theme… Sound effects (ElevenLabs)… Voice (edge-tts)… Code (Claude Code and Codex): the game is built with Phaser 3. AI coding agents wrote most of the modules in parallel, while we designed the systems, tested every build and tuned the balance by playing." Made in 72 hours by a team of three. The game runs in a desktop browser with keyboard and mouse.
