Project intro

US Tax Model turns the US federal personal income tax forms and filing instructions into open data, line by line: every entry cites its source and traces back to the archived IRS text, and it comes with a small set of verifiable computation rules and checking tools, so anyone can take the original text and check whether each line adds up.

The author’s starting point is simple: tax software gets its trust from the institution behind it, and vibe-coded software has no such trust built in — so he built verifiability into the project itself: formalized, cited, and machine-checkable. It covers the federal personal tax forms so far and is expanding to New York’s IT-201 form, aiming to cover 80% of federal filers (individuals only, not businesses).

Author Elliot Milco posted it to Hacker News on October 28, 2026, saying the repo is 100% vibe coded. The repo was created on October 23, 2026, and by November 5 it had 169 commits — the latest just 3 hours earlier — and 150 stars on GitHub.

Be warned: the author says it plainly in the original post — this is just a small project to test an idea, still a “back-burner passive project”, and you must not use it to file real taxes. Tax forms change every year, and keeping it up to date is an unsolved problem. Right now it looks more like a sketch of “something like this ought to exist” than a tax tool you can actually use.
