Project intro

JagBoom is a Bomberman-style game made for the 1993 Atari Jaguar. Its rules, levels, graphics, and sound effects all come from the open-source game Mr. Boom, but the author rewrote it for the Jaguar's chips instead of moving the PC code over directly, because the original's x86-emulating core alone needs 4MB of memory, twice the whole Jaguar's memory, so it had to be rewritten section by section against the original assembly.

The gameplay is the familiar Bomberman formula: drop bombs, blast open paths, and dodge your own explosions and your rivals' bombs, with up to 8 players on screen at once. In the 26 October update the author also added animation frames at the level edges and a spinning coin animation on the results screen. It is a free download, and the ROM file is only 2MB.

The most interesting thing here is not the gameplay itself but where it runs: the Jaguar is famously hard to develop for, and there are almost no Bomberman games on it, a gap the author wanted to fill. The original Mr. Boom is MIT-licensed, so the port is clean on licensing, and the page states that the original author and license stay with the game.

One heads-up: this is not a game you click and play in a browser. You need a real Jaguar with a Game Drive cartridge, or a Jaguar emulator, to run it. The author titled the 26 October update "first, and possibly last update", so whether it gets further maintenance is uncertain, so go in with that expectation before downloading.
