OweMyGod

A slow, polite debt reminder for friends: it reads their excuses, waits for the right day, and never nags twice in three days.

Project intro

OweMyGod is for the friend who always lends money and hates chasing it back. In Jakarta, where the app comes from, there is even a saying for it: the person who borrowed the money gets more offended than the person who lent it. The home screen looks like a chat list of who owes you, how much, and who is due today, and the whole point is to take the awkward wording and the remembering off your mind.

When a friend replies, you log what they said, in the mix of Indonesian and English people actually text in. A small fine-tuned model reads the excuse and works out what kind of time it means — tomorrow, a weekday, payday, the end of the month — and plain code turns that into a real date, because language models are bad at calendars and the model is never allowed to output a date itself. On the day, it drafts a reminder in the right tone, gentle, then playful, then firm, quoting back the friend's own words, and you tap to open it in WhatsApp and press send.

The pace is deliberately slow. There is one push notification at 09:00, only when someone is due or promised to pay that day, never two reminders within three days, and after three firm reminders with no answer the app tells you to talk in person and stops. On 25 fresh hand-written replies the shipped model got the exact date right 92% of the time, against 60% for plain keyword rules, and it was too early only 8% of the time — the mistake that costs a friendship.

Honest limits: the app is built around Jakarta slang and habits, with payday defaulting to the 25th of the month, though you can change that in Settings. The live demo gives you a private sandbox with four fictional friends that disappears after 24 hours. Names, phone numbers and amounts never go to any model, but the text of a logged reply is sent to the model endpoint to be read, and if the model is down, keyword rules and templates take over and the screen says so.
