Project intro

Vito (Voice In, Text Out) is a free, open-source, cross-platform speech-to-text dictation tool. Press a hotkey, speak naturally in any of 60 languages, and clean text is pasted straight at your cursor — in email, docs, chat or code. An AI cleanup pass strips fillers and false starts, fixes punctuation, applies your personal dictionary, and can be tuned with five built-in styles or a fully custom prompt.

Vito costs nothing and has no subscription: run transcription locally with Parakeet and a local cleanup model for zero usage fees, or bring your own key to providers such as Soniox, AssemblyAI, Groq or Claude. There is no tracking, no telemetry and no account, and history and settings stay on your own device. A searchable dictation history, a personal dashboard with streaks and achievements, a mini overlay and a browser version (no install) round it out, along with Vito Assist — start a dictation with "Vito, …" and your words become a command, such as translating text or answering a question.

The author is unusually explicit about how it was made. From the official site: "Vito is written 100% with Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding agent — and we're glad to say so." The site adds that the website itself and its build system are Claude Code's work too. Vito is free and open source under MIT for Windows, macOS and Linux (3 stars on GitHub at drafting time, with 92 commits and 15 releases).
