Second Plate
A dinner planner that checks allergies before it serves a recipe, and keeps your food rules on your own computer.
Project intro
Second Plate is a dinner planner for the one person you cook for. You type in what is already in the kitchen and how many minutes you have, and it plans one dinner that fits that person: their allergies, the foods they will not eat, the foods they love, and a note about how they are eating right now. On a heavy week, dinner has to come from whatever is already in the house and reheat well the next day, and this planner is built for exactly that kind of week.
The clever part is that the model does not get the last word. An open-weight model suggests one dish and writes the steps, and then a checker you can read scans the draft against the same food list. If the model mentions a forbidden food, or a food that is not in the kitchen, the steps are hidden and it has to try again. Peanut oil counts as peanuts, one shellfish blocks prawns and crab, and lactose blocks ghee, paneer, and butter. The green line under a recipe is the checker, not the model’s opinion.
Vibe-coded evidence, in the author’s own words in the dev.to article: "I built this with a coding agent in Cursor." GitHub stars: 0 at the 29 October 2026 check.
Honest limits: Second Plate is designed to run on your own laptop, where the profile stays in a file next to the app and the model runs on your CPU. The hosted link is a demo the author provided, not a cloud service, and the author has not handed the app to the real person yet, so the built-in sample profile (peanuts, shellfish, lactose, no cilantro or mushrooms) is only a starting point you must replace. A plan on an ordinary CPU takes about a minute, and the repository is a single commit from 13 October 2026, so expect a finished weekend build rather than an actively extended product.
