Project intro

Moonlight XR for Frame is a native Linux Arm64 game-streaming client for the Valve Steam Frame. It plays games and the desktop from your PC on a virtual screen in SteamVR, with the PC running Sunshine or Apollo. Unlike Sean Gilleece's Android-based Moonlight XR, this is a native rewrite: a C program using OpenXR and Vulkan in the Frame's own SteamVR, with video decoded on the Frame's Qualcomm decoder (H.264 and HEVC) and handed to the GPU without a copy. It runs at the headset's refresh rate (90 Hz, or 72 Hz), shows the stream on a flat or curved screen, in a black void, in passthrough or in one of three rooms, turns 2D games into 3D with a depth model (ZipDepth or MiDaS), and uses the Frame controllers as a mouse pointer or Xbox gamepad. Version 1.0.0 is the first stable build, tested in-headset at 1440p and 90 Hz with sound, pointer, menus and rooms working. About 250 MB free on the Frame, a PC with Sunshine or Apollo on the same network, and a terminal for install are required. GitHub stars: 15 at verification on 2026-10-25 (GitHub API stargazers_count 15; 249 commits; created 2026-10-11; repo updated 2026-10-23). How it was made, in the author's own words: "This is vibe coded, with manual review throughout. I wrote it with Claude Code, using Anthropic's Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 models running on the Frame itself." Free under GPL-3.0; the author notes it is heavily based on Moonlight XR by Gilleece and asks supporters to support upstream first.
