TaskDeck

Switch tasks with a gamepad on your handheld: open and close apps and check memory without touching the screen — a free, open-source tool with 8 stars.

TaskDeck is an Android task manager made for gaming handhelds, and it's controller-first: you can open, close, and lock apps and check memory usage without ever touching the screen. Its author is SilasDV; it has 8 stars on GitHub, and v4.0.1 was released on November 3, 2026. It's free and open source under the MIT license. It's straightforward to use: the D-pad or left stick picks an app, A opens, B goes back, X closes the selected app's window, Y closes everything at once, and R1 keeps only the current app. Apps you use often can be pinned to a favorites Dock, which holds 6 to 8 apps and lets you adjust size, background, and icon style. The memory view shows system memory and roughly how much each app is using, with charts to look at too. It has no ads, no internet permission, and collects no usage data — the author states that plainly in the README. But there are requirements to know first: it needs Shizuku to manage tasks, and the system has to be Android 10 or above; without root, you'll need to restart Shizuku once after every reboot. The APK is a direct download from the GitHub Releases page. Two honest caveats: closing a recent task isn't the same as fully killing an app — Android may keep its service running; and clearing tasks doesn't guarantee your games will run faster. The author built it first for handhelds like the Retroid Pocket 6; it installs fine on a regular Android phone too, but gamepad control is the whole point.
