Zotivity

A desktop app that works with Zotero: find papers, screen them, ask your own literature questions, and write reviews with page-numbered citations.

Zotivity is a Windows desktop app that works with Zotero and takes care of the whole literature workflow for researchers: first find papers in subject databases and screen them, then read the originals, ask questions of your own literature, and finally write a review with page-numbered citations. Your questions are answered only from the papers you picked for the project — it never makes things up out of thin air. It works like a guided wizard, step by step: each project has its own knowledge base. Drop in a few Zotero collections or your whole library, and it reads the PDFs and Word files and indexes them by page number. When you ask a question, every answer comes with numbered citations — click one and you see the original passage and its page. When you write a review, every citation and quoted line has to be checked against the original, one by one, before it counts. The project has 27 stars on GitHub, just shipped version 1.2.1, and was still being committed to on November 5 — updates come thick and fast. You pick the model yourself: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Mistral all work through their APIs, local models run through Ollama, embedding models run built-in on your own computer, and API keys are stored in the operating system's keychain. A few limits up front: right now it's mainly Windows — the startup scripts for macOS and Linux are prepared but haven't fully caught up. And it's only a tool: it can't read the literature for you or write your paper for you — the author says so in the README too, warning you not to hand the whole craft of scholarship over to it. It also used to be called ZotLLM and was only renamed Zotivity on November 1, so don't mistake old write-ups under the old name.
