PicoCalc Toolkit
Turn a PicoCalc into a standalone pocket computer: power on into a launcher for chat, music, weather and games — no PC attached.
Project intro
PicoCalc Toolkit turns a PicoCalc into a small computer you can use on its own: the launcher appears about two and a half seconds after power-on, no PC attached, and the keyboard and screen are all you need — with chat, feeds, music and games inside. The repository has 10 stars, its release shipped on 14 October 2026, and it was updated again in late October.
It packs a lot in: a launcher where one key opens each app; RSS reading, Open-Meteo weather with no API key, a calendar, notes, a scientific calculator; a WAV music player that keeps playing in the background while you use other apps; Snake, Tetris and a Space Impact tribute; and Wi-Fi file transfer from a computer browser to the SD card, so you stop pulling the card out to add music.
Installing it is straightforward: it runs on ClockworkPi's official MicroPython firmware, so you can try it without reflashing, and the release also includes a slightly patched firmware build that fixes a flash-write hang. Copy the release files onto the device, restart, and the launcher appears; your own .py mini-apps dropped into /sd/apps show up in the app list automatically.
Three things to know: it has only been tested on the Pico 2W board, so other boards may not work; music plays WAV only, so MP3 files need converting on a computer first; and the defaults lean Italian — weather starts in Rome, the calendar marks Italian holidays and the default feeds include an Italian news agency — all of which the author says can be changed.
