Project intro

Rhino is the 3D modelling software industrial designers use every day, and Viboceros aims to rebuild it as an open-source version in Rust: a modular geometry kernel with a command-driven interface, multi-viewport views, snapping, layers, groups, and undo/redo already in place. Analytic and NURBS geometry, trimmed B-reps, meshes, and SubDs are in progress, and 3DM, STL, and STEP files can go in and out, with the goal of catching up with Rhino compatibility over time.

Don't let the 9 stars fool you — this repo is worked on hard: 2,018 commits, with new work landing 35 minutes before this write-up, including CurveBoolean region picking and SubD-to-NURBS conversion. One author maintains it, and the README shows a real multi-viewport interface screenshot up front, with docs covering usage, commands, architecture, and testing.

The author says it plainly in the repo description: this is a vibe-coded open-source implementation of Rhino. The project is still in early development, and the author is upfront about that too — features come with limits, full Rhino compatibility is still on the way, and it's too early to use as your main tool. It's a better fit for people who want to contribute or see how CAD can be done in Rust.

The limits are practical: there's no installer, so you build from source with Rust 1.95, CMake, and a C++17 compiler. Some advanced features on Linux need extra libraries like oneTBB, and with 0 forks and no formal release yet, the version is whatever the main branch is today.
