Project intro

Techno Kitty is a bullet-hell game played to the music. The story is set in Neo-Mew City in 2099, a sleepless city powered by a giant subwoofer called the Heartbeat Core. It catches a virus and spawns a villain named D.J. Heartbreak, who remixes love into weapons. The hero is an orange cat named Pixel, with three kitten teammates; four of its nine lives are already gone, so the remaining five need to be spent carefully.

What makes this game special is that the song is the level: every bullet, every laser, every screen shake lands on the beat, so if you hear the rhythm you can predict the next wave. Dashing on the beat bounces away nearby bullets, chained bounces score combos, emptying a boss's health bar stuns it for a burst of attacks, grazing past bullets racks up points, and when there is no way through, a "purr bomb" clears the screen. Holding the focus key slows you down for fine movement.

There are five songs and five boss phases, speeding up from 165 BPM to 185 BPM, each denser than the last. From the second song on, beating a phase lets you hack one permanent upgrade out of the boss's gear: five-way laser whiskers, a kitten drone, faster dash recharge, or a catnip shield that blocks one hit, with more tricks the further you go. If you get stuck, practice mode lets you drill one section of one song, and your best score and fastest clear time are recorded.

One heads-up: this is a download, not a browser game. The Windows build runs straight out of the zip, while the macOS and Linux builds need LÖVE 11.5 installed to run the .love file. The music, sound effects, and sprites were all generated by the project's own scripts, with no sampled or off-the-shelf assets. The author says the whole game came together in one weekend, plus a few more hours of polish and itch page work, so don't expect it to be a big long-running title.
