Flare is an installable web app for small groups of friends (2 to 12) that fixes the group-chat stalemate: three thumbs-up reactions, nobody actually goes. A host sends a photo of where they are, and Gemma 4, an open model, writes a six-word invite from it — 'Meet by the quiet water's edge'. Friends tap 'I'm in' in private: everyone sees the count, never who. It lights only at the quorum (2, 3 or 4, host included, 2 by default), so nobody walks out to meet zero people. If too few say yes in 30 minutes, it shrinks to an Ember — a smaller plan at the nearest bench or picnic table within 400 m that fits everyone's needs — instead of dying. When it ends, the Flare, its photo and every yes are deleted within 5 minutes. Privacy is structural, not a promise: the group key lives in the link's URL fragment, which browsers never send to servers; names, places, photos and Sparks are sealed on the phone with AES-256-GCM before upload; the server only ever sees sealed blobs, counts and labels like 'c3'. A talking compass speaks the way out loud, invites show benches, restrooms and mapped steps within 200 m, and a 200-byte plain-text form works over SMS where the signal ends. It also has a Telegram card, a plan-for-later ladder drafted by a Mastra agent, and a 60-second demo plus a labelled 48-friend simulation. Built for the DEV Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge, Week 1: Touch Grass, with 830/830 unit tests passing and Lighthouse 100 on five site pages. Honest limits, as the author states: only one short real meetup so far (field test 2, quorum 2, met and talked); voice input failed twice on a real iPhone, so Remember-this and Say-it are off on live; the Render free plan sleeps, so the first load can take up to a minute; and in a very small group the count can give away who said yes. The demo URL was re-verified live by the publisher before posting (demo page loads, sample invite and quorum selector render); the Render free tier may still take up to a minute on a cold start.
