GeneGuessr is a daily web puzzle for biology lovers, inspired by Geoguessr and Wordle. Each day you're shown the 3D structure of a random human protein and have to triangulate which gene made it, using similarity clues. You get 10 guesses; every guess returns a feedback card showing how close you got, with matching properties highlighted. The valuable hints hide behind spoiler bars — revealing one costs a hint, you earn hints by guessing, and overly obvious hints stay locked so you can't brute-force the answer. Under the hood it's serious bioinformatics: protein data from UniProt, gene nomenclature from HGNC, summaries from NCBI Gene, ontology from the GO Consortium, domains and clans from InterPro/Pfam, architecture from CATH, pathways from Reactome, tissue specificity from the Human Protein Atlas, 3D structures from RCSB PDB, AlphaFold DB and SWISS-MODEL rendered with the Mol* viewer, and similarity computed with HiG2Vec, SaProt and ESM2 embeddings. There's a practice mode, guest stats with streak tracking, a leaderboard, and Discord login — free, no account required to play. The maker story is why it's here. The author is a wet-lab biologist whose own words are: "My coding experience is limited to basic python data analysis and figure making." And: "I made it with Claude over the last 2 months." What unlocked the project, he says, was Linear MCP — "where it could put each individual issue on a shared Kanban board" — plus Playwright MCP for testing against the live site. For bugs Claude couldn't one-shot, he'd "dump it into ChatGPT Codex — it would usually think for like half an hour, output very confusing explanations, but the bug was gone." He launched it on Hacker News as Show HN, framing the game as an answer to the question: "Now that we have coding AI, why isn't there a deluge of awesome AI-generated apps made by non-coders?" GeneGuessr is his exhibit A.
