Project intro

FIRESTARTER is a first-person flamethrower arcade game: you get one flamethrower, one city, and a run of 10 to 15 minutes. Set a building alight and the fire spreads to its neighbours on its own — windows glow, glass bursts, walls blacken with soot, and once a building has burned through it collapses into rubble. Your job is to burn as much as you can before the police take you down.

Scoring is all about chains: every building lit by spreading fire, embers, explosions, or collapse debris adds 0.25 to the chain multiplier, up to 3x, but each chain only counts for 30 seconds, so the fire cannot stop. The screen keeps popping up COLLAPSE, BOOM, car bombs, burning a police car, and shooting down a helicopter as bonus scores, and the run ends with a tally by score, burn percentage, and best chain, plus a spot on a local top-ten board.

The pressure from the chase ramps up layer by layer: witnesses and cameras will report you, there are more eyes on the street in daytime, and as the heat bar rises, foot police, patrol cars, roadblocks, SWAT, and finally helicopters come at you in turn; luckily you can slide, double-jump, vault railings, and climb ladders and fire escapes, and burn a helicopter down from a rooftop. Wind pushes the fire along, rain holds it back, and the cars in a parking lot are ready-made bombs.

There are three cities in total — Tinder Falls, Ember Bay, and Ashford — each bigger than the last, with the next one unlocked only after burning 75% of the current one, and a star badge for burning one completely; every city is generated from a seed, with alleys, bridges, rivers, and industrial zones. It plays in a browser, on a phone, or with a gamepad, and the phone version has auto-fire and aim assist built in; one warning, though: it needs a modern browser with WebGL 2 support, starts on Low graphics by default, and weaker machines should not force High.
